Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.
