Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
